Vaginal Independence - Booty Call or the Real Thing?

by Piyali Dasgupta

Test-drive a relationship

Are most men looking to establish a booty call relationship before
the real thing? A one night stand to test-drive a relationship with
no strings attached?

Women, on the other hand, are better off; they have a handful of
eager men to choose from. It is for this same reason that they can
afford to be a little pickier about whom they have repetitive sexual
encounters with. Is Indian society heading for sex anarchy? The
Swinging Sixties and the free love culture of the west did little to
bend the morals of the land of the Kama Sutra. During the 1960s,
popular cinema in India had shifted its social concerns towards more
romantic genres, showcasing such new stars as Shammi Kapoor - a
gyrating emulator of Elvis - and later, Rajesh Khanna, a soft,
romantic hero. The dominance of social questions continued across
the political and economic upheavals of the 70s and 80s. The
accepted turning point was the 1973, Prakash Mehra
blockbuster `Zanjeer', which catered to the anxieties and
frustrations generated by the quickening but lopsided pace of
industrialisation and urbanisation. Amitabh Bachchan became the
biggest star of the next decade, usually cast as the angry young man
who takes the law into his own hands to render justice and avenge
someone (mostly the ubiquitous `Ma') of Hindi cinema.
